If there are people interested in a custom design, I might suggest doing
a joint project and sharing the costs - with each member responsible for
contributing to the design and individually doing a complete design review
to give the project the highest chance of initial success.

If the core design was prototyped as AMIS 1.50 Micron ABN CMOS, five pieces
2.2mm square and packaged in a 28 pin DIP would be $1,130/5 + $20, or about
$250 each for a five member prototype team. Or if done using a small die
with the OMMIC 0.20 Micron GaAs process $2,000/15, would be about $150ea
for 15 parts that were 1.5mm by 1.0mm for prototypes.

The project could then eval the proto design, do a second if needed, then
look for support to do a larger run on a larger die.
