Pardon me, but what else should we be talking about? In the mailing
lists I've seen where
access software impacts on the interests of the listers (I'm thinking
about Todd Rundgren's Patronnet here) most people seem altogether happy
to help each other out with it, either as developers/experts, or as
people with similar problems. Having a 68K Mac isn't as glamorous as
having a really fast mainframe, nor is it as common as an IBM/Microsoft
machine, but it *is* a machine that can check keys faster than any human
possibly could. If we are to be able to find the elusive key, we need
all the checkers we can recruit, all the machines we can operate, and
all the good feeling we can generate in order to get and keep the
checkers happy, the machines working, and the keys cycling through.
Discussing tech support issues is one way of doing this.

It's true that Mac users aren't a majority, and 68K Mac users aren't a
majority within this subset. Unfortunately, I *am* one, and recruited,
moreover, from an item in a Mac users newsletter. I find it exciting to
be working on this problem, especially since it, like the Mac, is one
way in which the old paradigm of the all-powerful Big Bad
Military/Industrial/Governmental Conspiracy with its Big Bad Computers
is shown to be simply a myth. I would never, five years ago, have
believed that a) research into the encryption used for all these top
secret projects is in the hands of a private concern b) that they would
publicly DARE all comers to break their code, and that c) I could be
among a team trying to break it. It isn't James Bond, or even Alan
Turing, but it *is* the sort of thing I dreamed about doing back when I
used to break the little "very secret" cyphers my classmates used to try
to stump me with. ("You see, it's gonna be really, really, secret
because I'm gonna use NUMBERS instead of letters..." I used Playfair.)
I'd cheerfully, if asked, tack up recruitment posters around places in
town where computers are, and we wizards hang out, wear a T-shirt, add a
link to my homepage to get people to come join us. I wish this letter
could be filled with cheerful banter instead of a complaint. I'd love to
be able to show my as yet unborn descendants the little gold key or
abacus I'd buy if I won, or the books Gutenberg will transmit because of
us. I even am resigned, for the next few months or so, to having my
computer seem to work just a little slower and it needing to connect
every other day or so to get new blocks. But I can't really do *any* of
these things, either as a possibility or in good conscience, if the
client software doesn't work.

It takes in keys, checks them, and doesn't seem to give them back. (I
attach my logfile.) I don't get any graphs no way nohow, merely large
blank rectangles ornamented here and there with crazy dates. I've
checked Preferences, found no map or date errors in the machine itself,
and don't find anything else wrong except the malfunctioning software.
That's all! I'm sorry if this letter seems inappropriate to you, or that
it takes up so much space in your mailbox. I deeply regret that such a
high-minded enterprise has to degenerate into fruitless name-calling,
diatribes against "spoiled" Micro$oft users, long .sig files, or
whatever else, while everyone else decries how "off-topic" all this is.
In all the time I've had on the Net so far, and I've had at least five
years, I've yet to see so many professional, serious, people argue in
such an immature fashion: we seem more like TV show groupies arguing
over whether Jack Mc Coy should or should not have sex with his coworker
than programmers, researchers, and cypherpunks taking aim at a
mathematical algorithm. I'm sorry to have to single you out Mr. McNett,
but I find remarks such as yours a bit grating in what should be a big,
happy herd of cyphercattle. Have patience with us 68K Mac users, and
simply delete our discussions, or indeed, those of any listers with
systems different from yours. Lord alone only knows I've had practise!

Teleny, friend of cats.
