I'm not surprised that the assembly is efficient (Even the translated C) But
software implementation is always slower than hardware implementation.  I suspect
the only way to speed it up would be to re-write the algorithm.  Some of the DES
contest people re-wrote some stuff.  They called it bit-slicing.  I don't know much
more than that.
