I don't know if this has been considered or not, but perhaps the 
Berkeley team working on the SETI at home project would be willing to 
built a v3 compatable client?  I would love to work on that project.  
As Mr. Beberg stated,

- - the v3 protocol supports multiple simultaneous projects to be 
happening
with the client able to select from the available clients based on
integer/floating point use, bandwidth, memory usage, etc...

If we can choose our clients, many more people would join 
distributed.
