Could somebody tell me how to make a nice shutdown?

I started the client with
# nohup rc564 &
and stopped it with
# killall -HUP rc564
This worked fine with the old client, but now I get:

The first block was 90% done when the client received the HUP signal,
but it wasn´t stored to disk.
It was just gone, and the client started the next block.
