[RC5] Running on multiprocessor systems

Neither the Dec Alpha or IBM AIX clients support multiple threads.  
The requirements to create a multithreaded client include a working 
pthreads package, thread safe libraries, and thread safe core 
routines.  One of these probably wasn't available.
