198.41.0.4 (a.root-servers.net) and 192.36.148.17 (i.root-severs.net),
being root domain servers, will not do a recursive lookup for you. If you
tell one of them you want an address for rc5proxy.distributed.net, it'll
tell you what servers are authoritative for distributed.net, but it won't
recursively ask those servers for the answer and then tell you. So in
short, they're not appropriate name servers to list in your resolv.conf
file. They just plain won't work.

For example:

[cjohnson at norton rc5]$ dig @192.36.148.17 rc5proxy.distributed.net

; <<>> DiG 2.2 <<>> @192.36.148.17 rc5proxy.distributed.net

It won't tell you the answer.
