[RC5] Detecting rc5desh

There is an indirect way to detect rc5desh's operations. Attempt
to ScanDisk the drive that is being used for checkpointing and(/or)
buff* files. The constant fiddling with the files will (except for
extremely small drives) prevent the ScanDisk operation from
     completing.
MS's hoopla and handwaving is that Disk Utilities can lock the
entire disk filesystem (thus detecting changes to the disk). Is
there
some way to alter the hidden clients to detect this locking of the
filesystem and avoid writing to the disk during that time?
