Uh-huh, but unless you are planning on contributing 100 PII-450s removing
386's from the effort would still impact our keyrate - not drastically
but it would still affect it.

Yes. 

This is the ENTIRE POINT of the project.

To prove that if you add up all the idle power of even the least
powerful computers, you can do more than the biggest, most powerful,
most expensive machine on the planet.
