[RC5] P4 Speed Question

Yes, yes, ... [holding back the giggles]
Just last night I was reading Tom's Hardware and Anandtech's info on the P4
vs. the
new Athlon cores--dual cores. Intel produced the P4 to boost digital work
with MP3's,
video streams and audio streams, etc. As such the SIMD was boosted, but not
scalar
instruction power. FwIk of d.net cores on PIII and P4--even
Celeron--they're not
using the MMX to full ability. Never could since Intel still shares the MMX
/SIMD
processing registers with floating-point, unlike some other processors that
split the
vector and scalar processing into separate blocks/units that work in
parallel.
Athlon also suffers this "feature" of Intel family--hopefully, Sledge will
correct it?

Basically, the P4 will yield less than proportionate increased performance
for applications that are not heavily using SIMD.
